In Norse Mythology Jörmungandr was a huge Serpent Monster surrounding the Earth and grasping his own tail. When it releases its tail, Ragnarök will begin. Jormungandr will be slain by Thor, who will then take nine-steps away before succumbing to the serpents Eitr poison that it had been spewing in the air during the battle.
Jormungandr was associated with the Ouroboros, a symbol of a serpent biting its own tail and forming an unending circle.
